Jamaica Plain has always fostered a thriving creative community, whether musicians, visual artists, craftspeople, or writers. As Boston’s “hippest” neighborhood continues attracting young creatives looking for cheaper rent, studio space, and an inspired environment, the local art scene has exploded with energy. From painters capturing urban landscapes to jewelry makers using found objects to multimedia artists combining technology and visuals for interactive installations, Jamaica Plain serves as a launching pad for artistic innovation.
In this blog, we’ll introduce you to five of JP’s most buzzworthy emerging artists and creative entrepreneurs. Meet the makers bringing their artwork straight from studio to booth at the JP Flea showcasing the best of Jamaica Plain!
Capturing JP’s Spirit Through Acrylic Pour Paintings
Painter Zoya Patel first started experimenting with abstract acrylic pours during the pandemic and quickly fell in love with the organic, fluid art style. Drawn to Jamaica Plain for its creative spirit, Zoya found inspiration in the neighborhood’s greenery and diverse culture. Her signature acrylic pour paintings encapsulate the vibe of JP through vibrant colors and a sense of rhythm and flow. Each work is left semi-abstract so viewers can imagine their own shapes in the dramatic swirls. Zoya will be showcasing her newest acrylic pours featuring warm tones reminiscent of changing fall foliage at this year’s JP Flea. Meet her to learn more about acrylic pour painting and bring some brightness home with you!
Upcycling Salvaged Materials into One-of-a-Kind Jewelry
Lifelong Jamaica Plain resident Callie McKay finds renewal in taking discarded items and transforming them into sustainable jewelry pieces through her microbusiness Salvage & Design. Whether repurposing segmented wood pieces into earthy pendant necklaces or turning hardware store metallic bits into edgy cuff bracelets, Callie’s lifelong passion lies in creating unexpected beauty out of overlooked objects. She handcrafts each item using ethically sourced excess materials salvaged from local woodshops or donated by neighbors doing home renovations. Callie will showcase her newest upcycled jewelry collections at the JP Flea!
Capturing the Changing Faces and Scenes of Jamaica Plain
Figurative artist KyRee Jones finds the diverse culture and architecture of Jamaica Plain endlessly fascinating. Their series “Our Jamaica Plain” features intimate figurative paintings focused on community members from all walks of life. Bright colors, thick impasto brushwork, and imaginative backgrounds capture each subject’s essence with affection. When not painting people, KyRee creates colorful landscapes of scenes around JP, whether rows of vibrant triple-deckers or quiet atmospheric parks in autumn. Meet them at the JP Flea to learn more about their community focused art.
Preserving Traditional Haitian Metalwork
Jean-Claude Nicole is a Haitian-American artisan specializing in traditional Haitian metal art sculpture. After emigrating from Haiti to start anew in Jamaica Plain, Jean-Claude felt passionate about preserving the metal sculpting techniques passed down by generations. Look for his intricate unity sculptures and stylized garden art pieces forged from recycled oil drums at the JP Flea. Jean-Claude will demonstrate parts of his sculpting process and share stories of this long-held Haitian craft.
Creating Interactive Art Explorations with Code
Multimedia artist Haley Yang combines coding, electronics, and digital media to create one-of-a-kind interactive installations that respond in real time to viewers’ presence and gestures. Her pieces invite participation through sensors, lights, and screens that react to sound, movement, touch, and more based on programs Haley builds. Originally from California, Haley now calls JP home and finds inspiration in urban energy, data visualization, and human psychology.
